Recently, over a glass of wine, a friend recalled that during the Bicentennial in 1976, there were flags everywhere. They even painted the fire hydrants red, white, and blue, she said, and it saddened her that we weren’t doing such things for the 250th birthday of the United States. No one seems excited, she said.
