Quilting is often dismissed by those who don’t understand the handicraft as a quaint and gentle tradition, but textile designer Torreah “Cookie” Washington believes that fiber arts can foment revolution.

“Creating quilts is my social justice protest work,” says Washington, who curated the “Griots of Cotton, Indigo, & Clay” exhibit opening tomorrow at Charleston, South Carolina’s City Gallery.  “I can tell you the story of being an oppressed Black woman and you will hear 50 percent of it. But if you’re looking at the story, it will have a deeper impact on you.”
