Several years ago, my daughter and I decided to hang a bat house in our backyard. A bat house is just what it sounds like: a cereal-box-sized wooden enclosure that bats move into. Bats, we had learned, eat about 1000 mosquitoes per hour. Living in Louisiana, that sounded like a pretty great deal, and also, we would get to see bats swooping around.
I looked up “bat house” on the internet and discovered a web forum of bat enthusiasts. The first post I clicked was from a guy who had found a pre-made bat house at Ace Hardware. He was excited to install it in his yard, and wanted to know where it would most likely attract winged guests.
