Today, we return to the pool we’ve dipped into from time to time: Profiles of Charlotte’s restaurant mainstays, those beloved places that put the lie to the notion that Queen City dining means reservations at a restaurant that opened last Tuesday.

This one’s special to me, a New Orleans native whose family has south Louisiana roots that go back centuries. Sid Gottfried and a business partner from New Orleans opened Cajun Queen on Labor Day 1985, in a historic house at 1800 E. 7th St. in Elizabeth. It became one of Charlotte’s signature restaurants, with the 7th Street Gator Band entertaining patrons seven nights a week and during Sunday brunch with Dixieland jazz.
