This is my story of a food that has long brought my home of Syria to mind and heart: pita bread from the Mediterranean Bread Company in Birmingham, Alabama.

From the first time I had this bread three decades ago, I’ve been engulfed by emotion every time I taste it. I’ve grinned. I’ve cried. More recently, I’ve closed my eyes and thought of momma in our Damascus kitchen making lunch. Momma who passed away last spring, when that devastating earthquake rattled Syria and shook the earth under her aged feet.
