In a Victorian home one block off the Edgefield town square, Old Edgefield Grille offers what amounts to a master class in Romantic Restaurant Mise-En-Scène. Chandeliers suspended from pressed-tin ceilings create a magic glow. The sound system serenades with Sinatra favorites and nostalgic big-band numbers—all played quietly enough to allow intimate conversation across a candlelit table. Host and proprietor Stan Newsom tends guests with special-occasion diligence.

Indeed, much of the evening menu is special-occasion fare. Among the dishes emerging from the kitchen helmed by chef Armed Holsten, formerly of Aiken’s Prime Steakhouse, are insanely succulent pan-roasted duck breast in red wine reduction, maple-bourbon glazed Atlantic salmon atop smoked gouda cheese grits, and filet mignon draped with melted gorgonzola.
