It’s hard for a fresh food lover living on Charleston’s west side. You won’t find farmer’s markets, juice bars, or upscale grocers here. And even though our selection of sit-down restaurants and craft beverage purveyors is growing due to the redevelopment of the Elk City Historic District, healthy food options are still few and far between.
But community leaders are working to change this dynamic. Keep Your Faith Corporation (KYFC), in partnership with the West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition, Charleston Land Reuse Agency (CLRA), and Jobs & Hope recently broke ground on Ms. Ruby’s Corner Market, a neighborhood grocery store that will provide west side residents with easy access to healthy, affordable local foods as well as household sundries like cleaning products and paper goods.
