Big news from the Bacon! The collegiate wood-bat team on Sept. 24 announced it’s welcoming former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Litsch as its new head coach.
Honestly though, nobody in the stands at Luther Williams Field is overly concerned with the squad’s performance. Locals turn out to pose with mascot Kevin Bacon (“There’s nowhere else you can go and meet a 7-foot-tall strip of bacon,” club marketing director Ben Remelius told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution), nosh on bacon-wrapped bacon, and commend themselves for rejecting team names such as Soul, Heat, and Hits when it was put to public vote in 2017.

In addition to bacon-on-bacon, concession stands in the Macon ballpark serve a waffle sandwich of fried chicken topped with bacon and slathered with bacon jam. But bacon enthusiasts aren’t restricted to the bacon-forward portion of the menu: Fans can “baconize” anything for $1, which means crumbled bacon bits on peanuts and Crackerjack, as well as hot dogs and cotton candy.
Still, it’s hard to imagine an order more supportive of the home team than a $5 cup of bacon, baconized for a buck. Go Bacon!
