It's a wild apple world

A review of Diane Flynt's new book

For its first-ever book review, The Food Section invited Sean Turley—christened “one of Maine’s foremost apple nerds” by DownEast Magazine—to assess Diane Flynt’s Wild, Tamed, Lost, Revived: The Surprising Story of Apples in the South, published this month by the Ferris and Ferris Imprint of The University of North Carolina Press. The book features photography by Angie Mosier, and a foreword authored by Sean Brock.

It is impossible to divorce the history of the apple in this country from the complex stories of the people who cultivate them. It is an ever-present companion; an honest witness to the best and worst of what we are capable of.
