Most of the questions surrounding the federal job cuts orchestrated by billionaire Elon Musk have rightly centered on the cruelty and short-sightedness of President Donald Trump’s administration. But for food-and-beverage professionals, there’s another question hovering over the firings that feels almost too callous to say aloud: Could this help the hospitality industry?
Granted, if the country goes into an economic tailspin—or worse—no legal business is positioned to prosper. But for a sector that’s perpetually coping with staff shortages, it’s hard not to be tantalized by the prospect of more than 200,000 people looking for work.
