Hattiesburg, MS: Museum-quality cooking

All the towns where a train still stops are close to my heart, but Hattiesburg, Mississippi is one of the few places on Amtrak’s station list that’s personally significant.

My late paternal grandfather was among the 89,000 World War II troops stationed at Camp Shelby, sited just south of the city. He guarded German prisoners of war, who apparently enjoyed playing horseshoes and drinking beer while their comrades fought it out on the front.
