While plenty of ABC clerks confessed that they’d never heard of amaro, many of them confused it with other products. “You want the one with the elephant?” I was asked repeatedly. While I initially thought there was perhaps an Italian liqueur decorated with an elephant in recognition of the Carthaginian Wars, I soon learned that when I said amaro, they heard Amarula. We’re grateful to Diana Sidorevich, who lived in South Africa for five years, for explaining why that drink’s worth seeking out too.

Amarula is the defining liqueur of South Africa. Open a South African’s fridge, and you’re more than likely to find a tapered, brown glass bottle with an elephant on its label.
