When I describe this scene, it’ll be tempting to imagine it in sepia tones.
I was recently at Fiddlers Grove, a historic village in Wilson County, Tennessee. Thirty miles east of Nashville, I was surrounded by vintage buildings, among them a one-room schoolhouse and a rural doctor’s office. Next to a log cabin, two members of the Wilson County Cast Iron Community had set up an outdoor cooking demonstration. They were making biscuits, sausage gravy, and sassafras tea. Most of this feast was prepared in cast iron pots and skillets, and all of it was heated over a fire the guys had built that morning.
