When you step into The Cypress of Charlotte at Christmastime, the first thing you notice is the aroma.

Not the stench of impending death that my father feared when he took a tentative tour of Charlotte’s leading senior communities this past December. Newly retired, my parents are thinking hard about how they want their life to look in the coming years—or, in the case of my 76-year-old father, smell.
