As you’ve no doubt heard, the Southeast had an exceedingly strong showing at The James Beard Foundation’s awards ceremony on Monday night: Congratulations to Chai Pani in Asheville (Outstanding Restaurant), Mashama Bailey of The Grey in Savannah (Outstanding Chef), and Cúrate in Asheville (Outstanding Hospitality), as well as regional chef winners Adam Evans of Automatic Seafood and Oysters and Ricky Moore of Saltbox Seafood Joint, whose cookbook is another UNC Press production.
And speaking of awards, my take on the JBF revamp received a second-place prize for food criticism from the Society for Features Journalism this week, which I suspect is a first for a Substack newsletter. Thank you, paying subscribers, for continuing to support what the judges described as “sound logic, clearly articulated.”
