The Food Section had a strong showing at the South Carolina Press Association awards this past Friday, bringing home prizes for News Reporting, Reporting In-Depth, and Feature Writing, as well as the Best Newsletter title for its division. But the Review Portfolio contest, restricted to daily newspapers, was won by Michael Stern. Read on to learn how the legendary food writer ended up with an SCPA plaque.

After hearing a new resident of Aiken, South Carolina speak at her Rotary club meeting in the summer of 2021, the then-publisher of the Aiken Standard told executive editor John Boyette that they should invite the man to review restaurants for the paper.
